EVTEKS 2008 (Part II)

My visit to Turkey to attend the EVTEKS 2008 included sidetrips to some of the country’s scenic spots, foremost places and dining destinations. Together with some media friends, I got to see the Sultanahmet district, the heart of Istanbul. This is where you’ll find the Topkapi Palace (the official home of Ottoman sultans for over 400 years), the Ayasofya (the greatest church in the Christian world until it was turned into a mosque by Mehmet the Conqueror after he gained control of the city in 1453) )and the Blue Mosque (so called because of its interior tiles). I’ll tell you more about the sights to see and shopping to be done in this amazing city next week! In the mean time, here are some snapshots I took during my trip.

The name escapes me at the moment, but this old church along Istiklal Caddesi in Beyoglu is straight out of the history books. The details are amazing, from the ornate ceiling to the elaborate altar area

I recently attended the EVTEKS 2008, the second largest home textile fair in the world at the CNR Expo Center in Istanbul, Turkey. This event brings together leading home textile manufacturers and buyers from around the world. Products on display included home fabrics like curtains and upholstery, bed and bath fashions, table linens, floor coverings and rugs. The highlight of the fair? Trend forums and design seminards conducted by design bigwigs Gunnar Frank, Defne Koz, Catherine Rouget, Karim Rashid and Fulvio Alvisi. The Grand Bazaar (or Kapali Carsi) is Turkey’s largest covered market. Aside from exquisite jewelry (and counterfeit goods!), one can find a great assortment of Turkish carpets, pottery, tiles, brassware and a whole lot of other things that are perfect for your home!
